3 bits of news

Fire up your taste buds at the Isar

The most popular destination for hanging out and cooling off when temperatures rise in Munich is probably the Isar. Chilling on the river, swimming, or barbecuing are perfect activities to do here during the summer months.

But did you know that barbecuing is not fully permitted along the Isar?

If you are looking for some grilling spots in the city, why not check out the Isar website. They’ve got all the info you need on where grilling is allowed (barbecues are allowed within the areas marked in green), plus handy details on garbage bins, public toilets, and playgrounds.

The Munich Fire brigade has also shared some useful information to help you prevent fires during the hot summer.

And if you’re thinking about firing up the grill at home, it’s always a good idea to double-check your rental agreement first. Most will not allow grilling on balconies for example. Be mindful of your neighbors and try to keep any smoke and smells to a minimum.

Happy grilling!

Champion pizza maker

Did you know Europe’s best pizzaiolo is in Garching?

Giovanni Stincone, the chef at La Pergola, competed in the European Pizza Championship - yes it's a thing. He faced 240 competitors and won the award as the best pizza chef in all of Europe.

He can make seven pizzas in just three minutes. And he is firmly in the NO PINEAPPLE on the pizza camp. His next culinary goal: the Pizza World Cup in Parma.

The “Giovanni pizza” that won him the award uses Jerusalem artichoke cream instead of tomato sauce. What are his magic numbers during preparation? 370°C and two and a half minutes.

This winning pizza will be served in the restaurant for a limited time if you want to give it a try.

Emergency numbers to have on hand

What do you do when you need urgent medical advice but your family doctor or a specialist is closed? You can contact the national hotline for on-call medical services: 116117.

Surprisingly, only a third of people surveyed by the ADAC knew about this important number. However, the fact that 70% do not know about it means that many sick people go to the emergency room, even when it’s not a medical emergency.

If you’re new to Germany, keep these numbers handy too: 110 is the number for the police and 112 for an ambulance as well as the fire department. And your nearest late-night pharmacy can be found on www.apotheken-umschau.de.

You can find the news here.

Rollerblading after dark

Every Monday night from May 8 through September, you can join in on some awesome rollerblading through the city of Munich. It's a great way to see the sights at night, meet some groovy people, and have some fun.

You can rent or reserve skates at Inline skates. Or attend the workshops and demos that begin at 7:30 p.m. Then at 9:00 p.m. everyone will start rolling through the streets of Munich (the family event starts at 3:00 p.m.). Oh, and by the way, it's best to wear a helmet.

The awesome folks at Giesinger Brau will have their truck on site and will start serving beer at 7:00 p.m.

If you want to check out the routes planned, have a look here.

Or watch last year’s Bladenight so you can get an idea what to expect.

1 new restaurant/café to try

La Taquería by Cometa

You world-savvy expats spoke and we listened. We found a Mexican restaurant near Isartor that serves up some seriously authentic south-of-the-border food. You’re in for a treat here. From tacos to burritos to street food, there is something for everyone at this brightly colored diner.

Not only do they speak English, Spanish, and German, but they also have a little Mexican grocery section in case you want to pick up a few ingredients.

La Taqueria’s enchiladas are delicious and come with a serving of rice and beans. Also, try out their tamales.

Visit and let us know if your taste buds enjoyed the short trip to Mexico.
