3 bits of news

Delayed…again

We know this is not the first time we have talked about Germany's 49-euro ticket. But for those of us who have been waiting for it, we have some disappointing news. The much anticipated 49-euro ticket is likely to be delayed even further.

Originally planned for January, the launch was pushed back to May and now there is no set date. The lack of a firm date is due to the fact that no decision has been made on issuing paper tickets, which is more convenient for the older generation. There has also been no decision on children's tickets, which could be a challenge for families wishing to take advantage of the initiative.

This totally stinks for folks like us who rely on public transportation on the daily. We were looking forward to exploring Germany during the summer.

60,000 free train tickets between France & Germany

While some of us wait for the 49-euro ticket, there is good news if you are under 27 years old. Deutsche Bahn and SNCF are giving 60,000 young people the chance to win free tickets to travel between France and Germany this summer.

More details are yet to be announced. Stay tuned and we will keep you updated.

Read more here.

You could do an Emily in Paris tour, however, our suggestion is to visit fairytale villages like Eguisheim, the rust-red stone village of Collonges-la-Rouge, Dordogne, or the honey-colored stone buildings in Bayeux, Normandy.

German economy roaring ahead in 2023

Germany is on track to dodge an economic recession this year, despite feeling the grueling impact of the Ukraine war. Thankfully the effects haven’t been as bad as initially feared. This is in part due to massive government intervention, which has helped keep energy costs low for households and businesses.

The mild conditions this winter and reduced gas prices have created a positive outlook that the recession won’t be as bad as expected.

The lower energy prices has led to a slight dip in inflation. According to the economic ministry, this trend is expected to continue.

However, Germany is facing an enormous issue due to the shortage of skilled workers. This has led to 2 million vacancies and the number will only increase.
