Welcome back to the Munich Post! The purpose of this newsletter is to share: 3 bits of news, 2 upcoming events, and 1 amazing restaurant/café for expats living in and around Munich. This way, you have a pulse on what’s going on without scrolling through thousands of pages.

Events in Munich - now at your fingertips

Have you heard the Munich City Council has come out with a new app? It is designed to be a one-stop-shop for all events in Munich. Stadtwerke München (SWM) have teamed up with München Ticket and muenchen.de and have released a beta version of an events app called “muenchen app.”

You can download it on your iOS or Android and start planning all the fun events you want to go to.

I’ve already checked it out, and I’ve got to say, I’m impressed (I am easily impressed). So there’s that!

Essentially it is a virtual event calendar, which makes buying tickets a breeze. The app has all the info you need to know about upcoming events in the city, like when and where they’re happening and how much tickets cost.

The best part? Part of the app is in English, so it is user-friendly for those of us, who aren’t quite fluent in German (yet).

Here are 3 best use cases:

1. Buy tickets to that Viva Frida Kahlo exhibit we wrote about before 

2. Plan a trip to the Münchner Tierpark Hellabrunn to see the adorable animals

3. Take your visiting friends or family to the Munich City Museum

We wonder if they’ll add tickets to the KVR emergency line? Because let’s be real, that’s an event in itself.

Get ready to make room for IKEA!

Have you heard the latest buzz about IKEA moving to the city? I wonder if they need a SCHUFA check or will they get ghosted by landlords?

Apparently, IKEA wants to expand its presence in Munich and they are eyeing the former department store at Karlsplatz Stachus. I did some investigating and according to my trusty friend Google Maps, it looks like the Kaufhof department store has closed permanently. So it is possible that we could soon have an IKEA store downtown.

Currently, IKEA has two classic furniture stores in Brunnthal and Eching, but honestly both are quite a drive for those of us without a license or a car.

“We want to be where people live”, said Walter Kadnar, the new managing director for IKEA Germany. Well Herr Kadnar, please make it happen.

So fingers crossed, this new location in the city center will make our new Art Deco Pinterest boards come true!

Is Munich overrated?

Have you heard about kingcasinobonus.uk's latest ranking of cities? Apparently, they aggregated Tripadvisor reviews and ranked Munich as the 4th most overrated city (after Bangkok, Antalya, and Singapore). I mean, I love this city and all, but I guess some people just don't appreciate all that it has to offer.

I’ve been living in Munich for a while now and sure, it is one of the most expensive cities in Germany, but who cares? It is safe, right? And it's clean.

Whether it's sipping a beer at a local Biergarten, hiking or skiing in the nearby mountains, exploring the city’s many museums and galleries, or belting out tunes at the various karaoke joints, there’s always something to do and someone to do it with.

Some folks found the Deutsches Museum to be underwhelming and even Oktoberfest made the cut. I mean, come on, I don't know about you but I’ve made more friends in those two weeks than I have in my entire year of living here. – Arelene

Rollin’ on the dance floor

Want to take a trip back to the groovy 70’s? Roller discos are back and popping up all over the country and Munich’s Freiheitshalle is hosting regular events every Sunday in February.

I mean, who wouldn't love a chance to roll around on skates, jamming to some sick beats and generally having a blast? I’m not the best skater, but that’s all part of the fun right?

The dance floor is open to everyone, including inline skaters and people in wheelchairs. One important thing to keep in mind though, they don’t have shoes available to rent on site, so make sure you come prepared.

Can you imagine a disco-themed night with loads of Spandex, leotards, and funky big hair? Sign me up!

Get growing with the Flower Power Festival!

If you’re a green thumb or want to learn more about keeping your plants alive, this is the place for you.

Munich’s Flower Power Festival is all about science, sustainability, and the beauty of nature in the city. There’s going to be exhibitions, workshops, walks, theater performances, installations, and more. And the best part is, it is not limited indoors, you can enjoy the festival outdoors and even digitally.

Everyone is allowed to participate and contribute creative ideas to the theme of “Celebrating Nature in the City.”

1 new restaurant/café to try

Servus Habibi - taste the Mediterranean magic

Servus Habibi is a cozy little Lebanese restaurant on Schillerstraße and the food there is seriously amazing.

Vegans listen up, if you are a fan of falafel, you must try theirs: It is crunchy and delicious. And the hummus is to die for. We also love their taboule and the homemade pita bread is the perfect way to try all the yummy dips and spreads.

The service at Servus Habibi is super friendly and welcoming. It is a perfect spot for a casual lunch or dinner with friends.

If you go, we highly recommend trying the falafel, baba ganoush & the beetroot hummus. However, since it's a small place, it might be a good idea to book ahead or order to go.
