3 bits of news

Prepare for traffic control around Marienplatz

So the 59th Security Conference is coming up in Munich. It is taking place at the Bayerischer Hof on Promenadeplatz (also the location of the greatly overrated Trader Vic’s).

A bunch of big names will be attending, including 30 heads of state, a few ministers, and leaders of some of the most important international organizations like the UN, NATO, and the EU. Philanthropists Bill Gates and George Soros will also be in attendance.

Traffic is going to be a nightmare. There are no-stopping zones in and around the area of the security zone at the hotel. The police will tow any illegally parked cars. Therefore, take a close look around before parking. Handy Parken München can assist you (a must-have app if you have a car in Munich).

As a result of the closure of the Promenadeplatz from 6 a.m. Friday morning, tram lines 19, N19 and 21 will be diverted accordingly. There will also be massive restrictions on air traffic this weekend, so keep an eye out for that, too.

Personally I would suggest visiting Fischmeisterei at Ammersee to avoid all the mayhem.

Google to TUM: Here’s $1.2 Million. Can you hack it?

Continuing on today's security theme. Our favorite search buddy Google just donated a whopping $1.2 million to the Technical University of Munich. Gar-ching! 🤑

That’s a lot of cheddar and TUM plans to use the money to set up a new cyber security innovation network which will kick off in a few weeks. TUM’s Agenda 2030 aims at advancing research on data protection, security, and privacy. I don't know about you, but I sleep better at night knowing that someone out there is working to keep my online life secure.

And here’s a fun fact for you: apparently this isn't the first time Google has partnered with TUM - they’ve been working together since 2018 to promote women’s involvement in MINT subjects like mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology.

Munich Airport might have cancellations due to strikes, prepare accordingly

Hold on to your seats because Verdi (German service union) is at it again! You might want to think twice before traveling this Friday, February 17th as Verdi has announced strikes and the Munich airport is about to feel the brunt.

There is a possibility of partial standstill of air traffic too. The only flights that won’t be affected are aid deliveries to Turkey and Syria.

What’s behind this mess, you ask? Well, it's the ongoing negotiations for civil servants, ground transport services and aviation security employees. So far, it seems like these negotiations have been a total bust.

1 new restaurant/café to try

Wing Nation - American diner food

Are you in the mood for some finger-lickin’ wings? I’m talking about the classic American diner-style spread, complete with juicy wings, chili cheese fries, burgers, waffles and all the good stuff. Don’t get me started on the chef’s special which changes on the regular. I love surprises.

But here’s the thing, we have been there twice and it looks like they shrunk the wing size (probably due to inflation?), but trust me they are still packed with a lot of flavor.

Now let’s talk about the atmosphere, this place has got some groovy Afrobeat tunes bumping in the background. It will definitely get your feet tapping while you chow down.

Lucky for Munich, we have two Wing Nations, the one in Ganghoferstraße is licensed and the one in Maxvorstadt isn't. The Ganghoferstraße has four tables indoors and a huge bar seating. So if you're feeling sociable just grab a stool and order some wings.

The spicy garlic wings, the notorious BBQ burger and the original chicken waffles are absolute must-tries. However I am told the chocolate chicken waffles are just as good. Give ‘em a try and let us know what you think
