3 bits of news

Open for inspiration - The Bavaria statue

Good news: The Bavaria statue, built by Ludwig Schwanthaler in the 1840s, was closed during the pandemic, but now it’s ready for visitors again starting in April. The bronze lady stands 18m tall and has served as an inspiration for many people–she is the face of Bavaria.

And here’s something even many Germans don’t know: You can climb up the spiral staircase inside the statue and check out the epic view from her head. You can see the Theresienwiese and all the Munich neighborhoods around it.

Level up your German for fast track citizenship

Oh, mein Deutsch ist nicht so gut. I can order a Brezn at Wimmer bakery, but beyond that I’m just nodding and smiling and mime-ing my way through life in Munich. How good is your German?

Have you heard about the changes to the German citizenship law? The government is making the language requirement for fast-track citizenship harder, which means you need to level up your language skills.

Currently, all you need is to pass the B2 German test, but soon you’ll have to pass C1. How big is the leap from B2 to C1 you ask? It’s definitely not going to be a walk in the Olympiapark.

The fast track citizen application allows for you to apply after just three years instead of the current 8 years. If you do not qualify for fast-track citizenship, don't worry. You can still apply for citizenship after a normal period of residence in Germany, which is currently eight years but will soon be reduced to just five years.

Check out the details here (in German).

Munich S-Bahn adjusts timetable

So you know Munich S-Bahn is going through some major construction work on the main line as well as the airport line. This is due to the new electronic signal box being built at Ostbahnhof, which is supposed to put an end to the massive and frequent delays we’ve been experiencing.

The construction work will take place over the coming weekend, starting from Friday, March 17th from 10:40 p.m. until Monday, March 20th at 4:40 a.m.

Well, you know what that means? Changes to the timetables. All lines are expected to be affected. Make sure to check the updated timetable on your MVV app before heading out.

Walk the extra mile - Munich to Mittenwald

You better get ready for the ultimate challenge. We’re talking about the Megamarsch, a 100km walk in just 24 hours! This isn’t your average walk in the Englischer Garten, no sir. You’ll be trekking from Munich to Mittenwald, passing by gorgeous scenery (rivers, lakes and monasteries).

It is time to push yourself. Do something out of your comfort zone. You’ll be walking under the stars through the night and then catching the sunrise.

Most people can’t even manage 40km in one go (raises hand), so if you walk 40, 60, or 80km, you earn a certificate for each of these milestones and a special one after achieving all 100km.

📅 Saturday, May 13 - Sunday, May 14

⏰ 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.

📍 Meadow area Oberbiberger Str. 120, München

💶 Last-minute tickets from 74,95€

Do you have the physical and mental strength to conquer the Megamarsch? If so, then register here.

Gear up for spring at the bicycle flea market

You know Germans take their cycling very seriously. So it is no surprise that there are flea markets just for bicycles. If you’re looking for parts, accessories, clothing or even buying specialty and vintage bikes, then the Blumengroßmarkthalle (wholesale flower market) in Thalkirchen is where you need to be next weekend.

The Rasenmäher, who organize mountain biking camps and trips are proud to host their famous bike flea market on Saturday March 25. It has become a cult event in Munich as they attract many pro riders and serve up delicious food and drinks as well.
