3 bits of news

Proposal: Sell your car, and get an MVG subscription for 5 years for FREE!

Yes, you heard that right. We’d do it in a heartbeat but we don’t have a car ; ) Well, if you are living in Munich — do you really need a car? SPD’s Martina Weinberger doesn’t believe you do!

A few weeks ago, a Sahara sand storm coated half of Europe with a fine coat of dust. It has since revealed just how many thousands of cars haven't been used or even moved for a very long time.

This fortuitous outing became the impetus for SPD’s Martina Weinberger to persuade drivers to switch to a car-free life, at least in Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt.

The district committee really wants to implement this idea: If you sell your car and forgo driving for 5 years, then you can get 5 years of public transport for free.

It’s currently only for this specific quarter of Munich (Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt):

We think it’s an interesting idea, but it’s still in negotiation. So, we shall see.

Anyway, you can find more information here.

S-Bahn passengers from Pasing to Ostbahnhof can expect delays this weekend

S-Bahn passengers need to be prepared for restrictions again as Deutsche Bahn (DB) has scheduled another maintenance weekend from Friday, May 13, 10:30 p.m. to Monday, May 16, 4:40 a.m.

For passengers between Pasing and Ostbahnhof (the so-called “Stammstrecke”), no S-Bahn trains will be making stops along the main line. All S-Bahn trains will start and end at Ostbahnhof and Pasing, respectively, or are diverted to the main station. The S8 will bypass the main route via the Südring. DB will provide buses as a replacement between Pasing and Ostbahnhof. These will run on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every seven minutes, otherwise every ten to fifteen minutes.

If you are traveling by S-Bahn, we recommend checking out more details here and staying up to date with upcoming construction and scheduled maintenance here.

The do’s and don’ts of driving e-scooters

We wanted to share some rules for e-scooters around Munich so you can save some money in fines if that ever happens. Here are some simple do’s and don’ts.

Do’s:

  • Drive on cycle paths and cycle lanes.

  • You can only switch to the main road if these two are missing

  • Follow all rules that apply to bicycle traffic lights

  • You need to be at least 14 years old to drive an e-scooter

  • If you plan to buy an e-scooter, get liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung) for it as well

Don’ts:

  • Driving on sidewalks, in pedestrian zones, and driving the wrong way in one-way streets are not allowed

  • Park only in designated parking spaces; if there aren’t any, parking is possible on the side of the road, and on the sidewalks provided nobody’s path is blocked

  • No more than one person is allowed to ride e-scooters at a time (trust us, we see you)

  • Cellphones are not allowed while driving

  • Don’t drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs

So what are some of the fines?

  • 30€ fine for property damage during driving

  • Up to 500€ fine if you are drunk

  • Up to 100€ if you are using an electronic device (aka cellphone)

I wish they would incentivize us to report those double drivers with single scooty, I would have been rich by now.

Bladenight is back

Source - Creator: Andreas Schebesta - Copyright: Andreas Schebesta

If you are a skater or love watching skaters around the city (we do), you can join in the fun and explore the city with wheels on your feet every Monday evening.

Bladenight, which already started on May 9th offered 5000 participants, 4 routes, and unlimited fun.

You can find more information here.

Fancy a half-marathon?

If so, then the Sportscheck Run could be just what you’re looking for. The event is happening on July 3, 2022 – but you need to train for it now, don’t you?

Well, you can run either of these 5, 10, or 21.5km runs.

Our friend Chiara, Hi Chiara ;-), ran a half marathon previously without the prep (but she regretted not preparing for it and had pain later). Regardless of the post-run pain and she told us why this is such a fun experience. “It’s because people come out to cheer you on, the scene is so full of energy. People keep helping you with water and all.” Now, who doesn't want other people to cheer them on? :)

You can buy tickets to the Sportscheck Run here.

1 new restaurant to try

Vegan and vegetarian cuisine, bowls, coziness, and yoga - yes, yoga!

Café Wonder in Nymphenburg is our pick for this week. Why? Well, it is a cozy new restaurant where you can also do yoga! You can see the class schedule here.

Here’s what some of the reviews had to say:

“Bris (the owner) does an amazing job sending out good energy into the world.”

“Grandma makes the cakes. Great-grandma bakes the bread. The mother does the yoga classes... So everything is just amazing.”

The restaurant fills up quickly, so it is best to make a reservation by phone (0157 521 594 06) before your visit.

Even if it requires a reservation, Grandmas, I am coming for your baked goods!

Café Wonder, Heideckstrasse 14, 80637 Munich; Telephone: 0157 521 594 06, open: Monday to Sunday, 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed: Tuesday.

Happy Weekend,Aazar & Christina
