Think twice about taking a taxi

We knew this was coming but it might just help save the environment. Due to an increase in fuel prices and personnel costs, taxi fares will increase by up to 15 percent.

In the near future, anyone who wants to take a taxi from A to B in Munich will have to dig deeper into their pockets.

The taxi commission and the city council have agreed on this. Starting June 1st, the base price will climb from 4.60€ to 5.30€, and the price per kilometer from 2.10€ to 2.30€.

But customers can also use taxis with a fixed fare, or range tariff (Reichweitentarif), within a radius of 5, 10, or up to 45 km for 20€, 34€, and 115€, respectively.

If you want to travel with a fixed fare, you need to say so before the start of the journey.

The advantage of the new range tariff is that your rate is independent of your travel time. For example, in the event of a traffic jam, you would not owe more money. However, if you exceed the kilometer range, the fare switches to the general rate, and your final price will be the flat rate plus any additional kilometers.

Stachus U-Bahn station (U4/U5 passengers only) will be closed for 2 months from June 8

MVG is replacing some escalators at the Lenbachplatz exit at the Karlsplatz-Stachus station, which is why they are closing the U-Bahn stop for almost two months.

But it’s not completely closed.

You can still reach the station with the S-Bahn and with tram lines 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 27, and 28. Just be careful when you are traveling with the U4 and U5.

If you are traveling with the U4 and U5, you can get off at the main station and either take the S-Bahn one-stop to Karlsplatz-Stachus or walk (approximately 5–10 minutes).

In the past, many expats, including myself, had not been aware of such closures which led to a lot of wasted time and late arrivals.

9-Euro ticket: How to get it

Starting on Sunday, May 22, 2022, you can purchase the 9-Euro ticket via mobile or at MVG ticket machines. You can also get it from the MVG ticket center from Monday, May 23.

In case you missed the previous newsletter, here’s the most important information about this ticket that you might not know: This special offer applies to all forms of public transport, including trams, buses, underground, S-Bahn trains, and RB regional trains, but not ICE, IC, and EC trains, Flix trains, and Flix buses. And, the offer is only valid for three months (June, July, and August).

The English-German Comedy Club Munich is ready to make you laugh

As fans of stand-up comedy, we’ve been to the Comedy Club a few times and we really liked the atmosphere. A little secret for you: it’s great for expats. However, do not expect Russel Peters or Hasan Minhaj level comedy. Some of the comedians at the Munich Comedy Club are amateurs but it is still a lot of fun.

Date: Saturday, May 21, 2022

Time: 8 p.m. (but doors open at 6:30 p.m.)

Our tip is to arrive a little earlier, as seating is on a first-in basis and it gets crowded quickly.

The feeling when you’re at a Bazaar

Do you know that feeling when you walk into a big market? You see so much cool stuff, and you don’t know where to start. That’s the feeling you get from Munich’s Midnightbazar.

It has live music, street food, and a big flea market with lots of interesting things from the second-hand market.

Save the date: The Midnightbazar takes place on Saturday, May 28, 2022.

9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Kids’ flea market

5 p.m. to 11 p.m.: Night flea market + street food vendors

Love Portuguese food? 4.8/5 ⭐

One of our readers, (Hi Carlos) recommended After Church, a restaurant in Neuhausen near Rotkreuzplatz.

So, what’s amazing about After Church?

The cod-potato-egg and olive dish, Bacalhau à Brás, their Caipirinha cocktail, and Pastel de Nata custard pastry are some of the dishes that were recommended.

One Portuguese national said this about After Church: “Most authentic Portuguese food I've found here in Munich compared to Portugal!”
